Default Max number of bluetooth devices in one area

I read on howstuffworks.com that the maximum number of bluetooth devices in one area is 8.

I'm working with wiimotes and I'm trying to hook up more than 8 wiimotes in one area (they communicate over bluetooth). Is it possible to do this?

If not, how far away does a group of 8 wii motes and one blue tooth adapter need to be from another group?
