They certainly do not cause fires or explosions. The average car probably
has three or four really hot spots under the bonnet (hood) and several
unprotected sparks, cant see them banning vehicles from the forecourt!

However, cellular phones can interfere with some measuring equipment, such
as petrol pumps and drips in hospitals. Which is a more reasonable reason
for banning them.

The reason that hospitals ban mobile phone use is less to do with potential
interference & more to do with the mark-up on patients using bedside phones.
Doctors & staff probably refrain from their use in operating theatres & very
close to legacy equipment manufactured before EMC regulations came into
force that are known to be susceptible. Some probably refrain from frivolous
use in front of patients.

I had a short stay in hospital where I volunteered to switch mine off (some
distance away in a rucksack) before an MRI scan & was allowed to use mine in
a ward by a nurse. The food was expertly prepared to ensure patient's stays
were minimal. The FCC is considering their use on flights but don't hold
your breath.

The NHS in the UK is also considering allowing their use - probably in
wards, public places but possibly excluding areas around temporary warning
signs at a guess. A happy patient is someone who recovers quickly & uses
less resources - being able to contact friends, family & bosses with ease &
without inflated expense, lessens stress. Perhaps hospitals could charge for
the loan of chargers instead!

I had a good laugh in the Critical Cardiac Care ward (lots of electronics!)
where the "Turn your mobile off!" warning sign was directly below a WiFi
access point....
ok, different frequency and power, but even so!
