Bluetooth signals detectable by law enforcement

Hi ,

I read several news articles that police in United Arab Emirates are arresting people who sends porn sms's, even via bluetooth. Police says they have a device for tracing the senders of the material.

I'm sure they can, but to what extent? does anybody knows of these devices the police are using , what is their range ? can they caught you even if you are miles away from any public area ?
