Razr V3 or ... ?

There seems to be a fair amount of hype going on these days, about the
Motorola Razr V3. I read one review where they said the camera quality
wasn't that great. It terms of that price range and features, what do people
here suggest as a good competing bluetooth phone?

I had to make a choice between the Razr and the SonyEricsson K750i. I
have chosen the K750i, based on friends' experiences and playing with
both in the shop.
Pros:
Better camera
Bigger memory (and expandable)
Longer standby time
Radio, with RDS
Not a fold-open phone

If you're looking for a very slimline, compact device to make and receive
phone calls, send & receive texts and connect your laptop via GPRS* to send
& receive e-mails, etc then the V3 is excellent. I upgraded from my bulky
old V600 and am very, very pleased with the V3, not least because the menus
and keypad operations are virtually identical so I avoided the frustrating
learning curve normally suffered when upgrading. The lazercut metal keypad
is surprisingly good in use, quite unlike similar looking membrane style
keypads.

If, however, you're looking for a hi-res digital camera, video camera, large
memory mp3 player, games console and all the other gubbins which most people
half my age seem to want in a mobile phone, forget it. It may look cool but
it won't give you excellent performance on all those extra bells and
whistles. What do you expect, it's only about 14mm thick!

* incidentally, the supplied cable allows you to benefit from the full GPRS
speed capability, which using the Bluetooth connection does not. The phone
also charges via the laptop cable, which is neat.

This month's (January 2006) Consumer Reports gives high ratings to both the
LG VX8100 and the Motorola E815, which both have Bluetooth and which operate
on Verizon's or Alltel's CDMA network. The Motorola E815 is rated # 1. The
RAZR V3 is not rated nearly as well, and has only 0.3 megapixels (the other
2 have 1.0). On page 20, they rate Verizon Wireless as "consistently a top
performer" and they rate Cingular as "Middling to low levels of consumer
satisfaction". I don't think I'd buy a Razr V3. What you say about a
"fair amount of hype going on these days" is right on the money.

The just released or recently released V3i reportedly has an improved camera. I don't
remember the specs, but should be easy for you to check out to see if it will
meet your needs.

I have an original V3 and like it a lot. The only drawbacks I've identified
so far are that the screen is not readable in bright sunlight (excellent
otherwise) and there is no way to reject an incoming call (send to voice mail)
when the phone is closed unless you're wearing a headset.

I just use the volume control to reduce the sound and let the call rollover
to vm.
