WIFI Network with 1 mile range?
Hi All,
I am a bit of a noob when it come to WIFI.
What I would like to do is share my web connection so that I can use the connection about a mile away from my house.
I live in the mountains and my house sits higher up from where I would like to be able to logon.
To get this sort of range, what sort of equipment would I be looking to get?
Also does WIFI need "line of site"?
Do WIFI signals travel down hill well?
Apologies if stupid questions!
Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance =)

you're not going to find a consumer wireless product that's going to travel a mile..get satellite internet. and yes..any wireless signal needs a line of sight to get proper signal.

I have to disagree. You can get many different consumer wireless products that can have a 1 mile range. What you will need to do is hook a directional antenna up to pointing towards where you want to have the signal. You shouldn't have any problem going 1 mile as long as you have line of sight.
I wouldn't get satellite internet except if it were the last available option. Most of the people that have it that I have talked to have a major problem with it staying connected as well as a problem with very slow response times. Thick clouds can keep you from having service.

I agree with Casisiempre. A wireless connection can easily cover 1 mile with line of sight.
Directional antennas are exactly what you need. A couple of old sky mini dishes will do nicely with cantennas fitted where the LNB's should be. Line of sight really helps, without it you would need some extra hardware (and even with it you could still only get through some trees ).
STAY AWAY FROM SATELLITE INTERNET CONNECTIONS! IT SOURIOUSLY SUCKS D**K. I have been called out to a few places that have had sat connection and they are terrible.

well..i work for an ISP and we have a wireless property built on alvarion. believe me when i say if there's a little fog/cloud/rain/tree being moved by the wind, you will not get a connection. i've never used satellite for internet since i have a 6mbps connection at home, but any wireless sucks when there's no line of sight and it's traveling long distances. the signal coming out of the AUs that we have, travel several miles because it's a commercial grade, so, all i can say is you guys are used to domestic products such as linksys/dlink/netgear/belkin and such which works fine within 50-75 feet or so, but traveling 1 whole mile is another story without paying at least 200-600 bucks for a directional antenna. even then, you wouldn't know what kind of performance you will be getting due to nature's elements.

The company I work for gets 10 miles point to point from our CPE with a $40 flat pannel antenna from MTI Wireless Edge so I don't know what you are talking about.

WE baught 155 from them to use with our CPE from their company..You can buy less just click on the contact us tab on the web site..We were more than satisfied with their performance and they provide more specs on their products than most manufactures do..click on the commercial tab to see their commercial grade equipment.. I don't know of any vendors that sell these antennas but that might be becuase they rebadge them..

I got the same problem
rather then start a whole new post for the same problem, ill continue this one...
I connect at 21kbps my friend down the road has 6mbps (dreamy), but he is rich and pays like $80 per month for it. I cant afford that, and the cable company that he uses told me that they will only sell me 6mbps not their lower cheaper plans (because i live in a rual area). Hes got home wifi, and said that i can connect to him. But I have been searching and havent found any wifi cards that go past 3000ft, he lives about 1 mile away. Im not looking for 6mbps, im just looking for 100kbps+ If i point this directional antenna at his house (i can see his house) could I connect to his? What can I do to connect to his place with wifi?

Ok what i would do is get some 9 dbi antennas for whatever router he has and put up at least a 15 dbi directional antenna at your place going to a good wireless card 350 mw or better and you should get a pretty good connection being that you have line of sight....now at your end im refering to using an antenna mounted on the outside of your house. It would be a bit of trouble drilling holes and running cable but well worth it in the end.
