Default Home Netwrok for Newbie

I apologize in advance for seeming thick. I want to set up a home network between my desktop running XP home and a laptop running the same OS. The desktop is connected via LAN cable to a 2Wire DSL modem supplied by SBC. This is also a wireless router. Via the wirelss card in the laptop, I can connect to the internet. Great, now I want to set up a network with both machines and let them A) share the printer directly connected to the desktop machine and B) share many files on both machines. Now this is where I seem to get stupid. I have run the Network Setup Wizard on both machines, I have set up printer sharing on the desktop where the printer is actually connected. But A) the printer cannot be accessed or seen by the laptop. B) in My Network places on each machine I see only the respective machines natively, for example I see the desktop machine only on the desktop's my network places, and I only see the laptop when viewing my network places on the laptop. By the way, I have turned off both firewalls. I am obviously totally lost at this point. Can some one give me a step by step set of instruction for each machine in order (desktop first and wirelessly connected laptop second, which will enable me to do what I want to do? I know this is long winded and a lot to ask, but I do need the help.
