New bluetooth device

I'm thinking about creating a new bluetooth device, but I am not sure how exactally bluetooth works. The device connects currently thru a standard Cat5 cable with non-standard plugs. Would this be something that is possible with bluetooth? If so, where might I find more information on how this could work?
