stereo bluetooth transmitter/adapter questions

I've been seeing stereo bluetooth transmitters/adapters and they can connect to mp3 players, computers, airplane seats, etc..
I've been wondering if you could pair any set of a2dp stereo bluetooth headphones with them. Because they adapters usually come with their own headsets, but I only want to use the ultra comfortable pair I have already.
