Default Bluetooth adaptor in Linux

I am trying to run my Belkin bluetooth adaptor using Ubuntu command line. I'm using it straight from the box; its detecting devices but when I try to make a connection to my Sony Ericsson k610i using sudo hcitool cc; it connects for a second then disconnects. When I try connecting from my phone, after a second it says "Bluetooth connection failed". Any ideas; no real idea how to use this thing.
