MP3 Ringtones

Hello !

Do either the K500i / K700i / S700i support MP3s to be used as ringtones? I
know they support playback of MP3 clips using an in-built app.

At least the (unbranded) K700i does this. However, Vodafone here in
Germany brands the phone so badly - they would say smartly, I guess -
that it does not accept any non-Vodafone MP3 ringtone anymore.....

So you better make sure that you get an unbranded phone.

Thanks for the info. What about the K500i ? Any one here have any experience

Unbranded handsets definately do, However some branded/butchered/lobotomized
handsets have it disabled. e.g. Vodacack Live! .... WHY ????

Yup, they can also play AAC(MP4/iPod) music as well BTW

For what it's worth, I am in Australia and was sucked into buying the
Vodafone branded K700i.
I bought it through a Vodafone franchise store (so not one of those Vodafone
only stores, it had it's own company name) and was not happy about the
ringtone issue.

I asked the vendor how much it would cost to exchange my phone for an
unbranded K700i and he quoted me $200.

Obviously I was not willing to pay this, so after a couple of calls to
Vodafone I used their email complaint service and told them about my
disappointment. I think written complaints have more effect as they have to
reply to you in writing.

My email contained the following:
1. Names of the people at Vodafone whom I spoke to including dates and
times.
2. My exact issues with the branded phone, including the ringtone issue and
being unable to update the firmware via the Sony Ericsson site and the fact
that none of these were communicated to me at the point of purchase.
3. My solution, which was for the vendor to order an unbranded phone at the
price of $200.00 which I would cover for the interim.
4. That I expect Vodafone to either credit my Vodafone account or reimburse
myself via personal cheque.
5. A bit extreme and probably not needed in my case, but I said that if this
complaint was not handled to my satisfaction I would be contacting the
Telecommunications Ombudsman to explore my rights as a customer. I doubt
that I would have gone down this avenue regardless, but I'm sure that people
out there care more about it than I do.

I think working in an area that deals with customer complaints has helped me
because Vodafone emailed me back the next business day stating that if the
vendor ordered the unbranded phone, they would cover the $200 if I provided
them with a copy of the receipt. The email said it was a goodwill gesture,
and that they accept no responsibility for this so please don't expect that
they will do the same for you if you try it. I work for a large bank, and
goodwill gestures don't get granted towards those who demand it. They are
not consistent, and the excuse of "you did it for this guy" does not work.
Be constructive with your criticism. Act as though you have half a brain
cell. People really need to learn that getting angry at customer service
representatives can only hurt you, not help you. 99.99% of the time, some
poor person who has nothing to do with your issue will be taking your shit
and will not WANT to help you. That's the trick though, you have to make
this person want to help you. Be firm, but polite in your complaints and I
guarantee that you will get what you want and MORE.
(By the way, this isn't directed at you specifically, but all 'customers').

I have been a satisfied Vodafone customer for a number of years, and this
branded k700i phone gave me the right shits. However, their customer
service towards myself was exceptional and I have had my faith restored
along with my ability to use mp3s as my ringtone.

Once again, I stress that this may not work for you since it was a goodwill
gesture. I was very fortunate for Vodafone to do me the favour this time,
but don't expect the same treatment.

I hope this helps in some way. Vodafone need to steer away from this
branding issue, because the loud minority will cause them nothing but grief.

I bought an F500i which is Vodafone branded version of K500i and NO it won't
let you use MP3's as ringtones. I returned within my 14 day cooling off
period for full refund and bought a SIM free K500i which allows you to use
them without any hassle at all. Menus are much nicer to use too.

DON'T BUY ANY PHONE THAT IS VODAFONE BRANDED.........YOU'LL REGRET IT

I got a K700i (T-Mobile) and an S700i (Vodafone).

Now if you think I can have MP3 ringtones on my S700i your having a laugh. I been up half the night thinking that there was something I have been doing wrong. I sent a ringtone via bluetooth from my PC to my S700i. Would the phone allow me to set it as a ringtone?

And from what I hear from reading the posts in this forum Vodafone really have an issue with their branded stock. I dont get how a branded K700i (T-Mobile) can allow me to do it but an S700i does not. I read a section in the instruction book which says the following:

"If you want to use an MP3 as a ringtone, you can only use some copyright-protected files specially designed as ringtones. Please consult your network operator for more information"

Correct me if I'm not wrong but is this not commonly known as "Business Bullshit?". An MP3 is an Mp3 it dont matter where you find one they all work in the same way, its just funny how they allow you to use the MP3's that come on the phone as a ringtone but not one that you wish to choose. As well as being the most expensive network they also seem to have the most excuses.

It didn't work, then I found that my K700i's firmware not updated.
Went to SE service centre and got my firmware updated to R2AA003
IT WORK.

A friend of mine had the same problem. he had a Vodafone branded K700i. When he complained he found out that apparently the branded phones were crippled by Sony and not Vodafone. They even had a piece of software to fix the phone so it would accept MP3.

I don't know if it's true but that's the story he got, and seeing they would help him in removing the crippled function you might come to the conclusion that it is in fact true.
